MANGALDAI: One day, some members of Udalguri Youth for Change (UYFC) were sitting at the picnic spot in Bhairabkunda and as they casually looked around they noticed that their beautiful hangout spot was turning into a dumping ground by the picnickers and other people. They would leave behind plastic bottles, beer bottles, empty packets and so much more.

Having witnessed this, they decided that something had to change and it had to be done at a scale where other youths could also take part to bring about a continual change within the community. Accordingly, all members of UYFC decided to initiate a cleanliness drive on Independence Day with the idea of bringing about awareness on environmental degradation and behavioural change amongst the people.

The word about the drive spread among a circle of friends and active groups and around 200 people signed up to be part of this massive project which turned out to be a huge success. Various groups with a coordinator and group captains were formed for both the east and west riverbank areas. The trash was collected and gathered at a particular spot, which was then carried away by a truck and disposed off in an eco-friendly manner. After this was done, several dustbins were installed in hotspot areas to encourage people to discard waste properly. This drive was a success as many people turned up and joined hands for this good cause. All the members were very encouraged by the support that poured in. Seeing this overwhelming response, the members of UYFC have been motivated to organize more such conservation and cleanliness drives in the district.
