Silchar: The zeliangrong Students’ Union (ZSUS) Silchar organized its 7th Freshers’ Meet cum social function 2019 under the theme “Togetherness” at the District Library Auditorium recently. The programme was graced by Dr. Ravi Kannan, Director, Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre as chief guest and Dr Marykim Hoakip, assistant professor, Department of Linguists, Assam University as the guest of honour. Representatives from ZSU Manipur and Assam, All Naga Students’ Association Manipur and also distinguished guests attended the event.
ZSU representing the Zeliangrong community has been working for the welfare of Zeliangrong student community in particular and other tribes as well as people in general in the town since its inception in 2012. Zeliangrong artists from various places also participated in the programme and displayed their artistic talent in the extravaganza items which include traditional and modern dances, classical as well as western and traditional shows, both songs and dramatic performances.
Nearly 400 students inhabiting in Barak Valley attended the event. They raptly listened to the enlightening and informative speech of Dr. Ravi Kannan, centering around health and education. He laid stress on better education and better health for the students in order to keep themselves fit and agile and be competitive in this age of competitiveness for better placements in life. Moses Newme, president, ZSU, expressed his gratitude and thankfulness to all those who lent their wholehearted cooperation.
ZSU has demanded a multipurpose complex for Zeliangrong youths here who come from around 43 villages dominated by the community for various causes. The population of Zeliangrong in Cachar is 36000. Moses said, “We have doctors and engineers. We want aspirants for state and central level services. Such career-oriented students can stay at the complex and pursue their studies and reach their higher aims. Gaizingam Dangmei, vice president, ZSU, also spoke on the occasion, calling upon youths to be more engaged in their studies.
