ECI Declares NE Assembly Polls Dates: Tripura on Feb 16, Meghalaya and Nagaland on Feb 27

The ECI stated that Tripura constituencies will vote in a single phase scheduled on February 16 while Meghalaya and Nagaland will vote on February 27

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission of India (ECI) today has announced the Assembly elections scheduled for the northeastern states of Meghalaya, Tripura, and Nagaland. The ECI stated that Tripura constituencies will vote in a single phase scheduled on February 16 while Meghalaya and Nagaland will vote on February 27 and the votes will be taken into account in all three northeastern states on March 2. The term of the three assemblies, each having 60 seats, will conclude on March 12, 15, and 22 respectively. The dates were declared by Rajiv Kumar, Chief Election Commissioner, at a press conference.

There are higher than 62.8 lakh electors merged in Nagaland, Tripura, and Meghalaya inclusive of 31.47 lakh female electors, around 97,000 80 voters as well as 31,700 PwD voters. About 1.76 lakh initial voters are eligible to participate in the elections in the three states," Kumar stated. He further said that 376 polling stations in these northeast states will be administered by women.

The ECI chief also mentioned that young recruits of the Election Commission will be in charge of numerous poll booths to fight the probable aloofness among youth as experienced in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.

The Election Commission of India will circulate the gazette notification for Tripura on January 21 and Nagaland and Meghalaya on January 31. The final date of making nominations for Tripura is January 30 and that of Meghalaya and Nagaland is February 7. The scrutiny of nominations date for Tripura is scheduled on January 31, and February 8 for Nagaland and Meghalaya. The last date of withdrawal of the nominations for Tripura is February 2, and for Meghalaya and Nagaland is on February 10.
