IMPHAL: A labourer hailing from Assam, was gunned down in “self-defence” on Friday morning when he reportedly attempted to attack a family in Imphal West district with an axe.
A person from the family that attacked the intruder also suffered a bullet injury in the incident.
The incident reportedly took place around 8 am in the Changangei Uchekon area near Imphal airport when a stranger, later identified as Govind Basumatry from Assam , barged into a house belonging to one Laishram Thoiba (44) without any reason, local sources said.
Govind was trying to tell something which the family members could not understand. While moving out of the house, he suddenly picked up an axe from the house’s courtyard and charged at the family.
In retaliation and to save his family members, Laishram then shot Govind with his licensed double-barrel gun in “self defence”. In the incident, Laishram’s elder brother, Romio, also sustained a stray bullet injury in his right leg, locals said.
Govind was engaged as a labourer by a private company in a road construction in the Kangchup area near Imphal, they said.
Minutes after the incident, police and forensic science experts arrived at the spot. The motive behind Govind’s attempt to attack the family is yet to be ascertained.
