Assam Rifles recovers areca nuts in Manipur

In yet another success in its crusade against smuggling activities, Serchhip Battalion of Headquarters 23 Sector Assam Rifles

MANIPUR: In yet another success in its crusade against smuggling activities, Serchhip Battalion of Headquarters 23 Sector Assam Rifles, under the aegis of Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), recovered 475 bags of areca nuts worth Rs 1,01,88,750 at general areas of Tlangsam, Champhai district in Manipur on Saturday, stated a press release.

The operation was carried out by a joint team of 8 Assam Rifles and 2 Assam Rifles on specific information.

Approximate cost of the recovered areca nuts is Rs 1,01,88,750. The seized contraband items were handed over to Customs Preventive Force Champhai District on Saturday for further legal proceedings.

Ongoing smuggling of areca nuts is a major cause of concern for the State of Mizoram, especially along the India-Myanmar Border. Assam Rifles, rightly christened as the 'Sentinels of Northeast' have continued their efforts against the smuggling activities in Mizoram.
