Chandel: In a major breakthrough, the Assam Rifles troops recovered a large number of drugs during an operation. The consignments of drugs were being smuggled across the border from Myanmar in the Laiching area of Manipur's Chandel district. The troops carried out the operation at 3.30 am on Sunday.
In a press release, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Assam Rifles (South) said, "while carrying out search operations in the area close to Laiching-Kotak Khuntak track, the troops located concealed items in a bush beside the track." In a tweet, the Assam Rifles said that Heroin worth Rs. 68 lakh packed in soap-case packets were recovered by the troops.
The recovered drugs have been handed over to Chandel Police for further investigation.
Earlier on Friday, a Maruti Dzire with the registration number ML05-Q-7260 was stopped at the vehicle check post at Tengnoupal in Manipur's Tengnoupal district.
The Imphal-bound car brought illegal contraband items from Myanmar. The estimated cost of these items was worth Rs. 1.79 lakh. The driver of the car has been identified as Ongunsata Haokip. He is a resident of Moreh Ward no. 7. He along with the contraband items were handed over to Tegnoupal police station for further investigations.
