Manipur being a border state is close to the golden triangle in South-East Asia (Laos, Myanmar and Thailand), as a result of which drug trafficking surged in the state. The menace of drug trafficking and drug abuse is rapidly spreading its tentacles in Manipur despite numerous and increasingly larger hauls on record.

It needs to be mentioned here that the Manipur Government has staged a war against drugs in the state. In the year 2018 after the N. Biren Singh led government came to power, they launched a 'war on drugs' campaign to curb the menace in the state.

Recently, Singh announced that the state government is planning to develop a 'war on drugs' model village at Peh village in Ukhrul district.

The residents of Peh village have destroyed poppy cultivation in tandem with the state's call on 'war on drugs' campaign. Singh further announced a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh to Peh villagers in recognition and appreciation for the noble initiative and pledged to make a 'poppy free village'.
