IMPHAL: In the northeastern state of Manipur, violence has once again erupted, with reports of miscreants allegedly setting ablaze houses belonging to the Kuki community in Imphal late Monday night. This incident comes amidst a series of violent clashes triggered by ethnic tensions, which have been raging since May 3. According to reports, over 150 lives have been lost, and more than 1,000 people have been injured, while approximately 50,000 individuals have been displaced due to the ongoing violence.
Despite claims by the Manipur Chief Minister that normalcy has returned to Imphal, the recent arson at Cannan Veng/Zomi Villa, a prominent area in the heart of Imphal, highlights the grim reality of the situation. The state's law and order have been severely compromised, and the region has become a hotbed of impunity, leading to devastating consequences for its residents.
Notably, a 21-member delegation of the opposition alliance I.N.D.I.A recently visited the violence-torn Manipur on a two-day mission. The delegation, comprising prominent political leaders from various parties, including the Congress, JDU, Trinamool Congress, DMK, CPI, CPI(M), RJD, SP, JMM, NCP, AAP, Shiv Sena, VCK, and RLD, visited relief camps in Imphal, Moirang in Bishnupur district, and Churachandpur. They also met with the victims and presented a memorandum to Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhawan, seeking immediate measures for restoring peace in the state.
After the delegation returned to the national capital, they made a heartfelt plea to the Central Government to take urgent action in addressing the escalating violence. Their call for peace and stability in Manipur has become even more pressing as the situation continues to deteriorate, endangering lives and further dividing communities.
In conclusion, Manipur's ongoing ethnic clashes have taken a heavy toll on the lives and homes of its residents, particularly the Kuki community. The recent torching of houses in Imphal has intensified the urgency for immediate measures to restore peace and order in the state.
