Hathei Chilli And Tamenglong Orange Of Manipur Get GI Tag

IMPHAL: In a significant development, the famous Hathei Chilly and Tamenglong orange of Manipur have been granted GI Tag.

The announcement was made by Chief Minister of Manipur N. Biren Singh on Friday.

He wrote on twitter, "What a great start to the day for Manipur! I'm really happy to share that 2 (two) products of Manipur viz Hathei Chilly & Tamenglong orange have been granted GI Tag. This is a historic milestone in the history of Manipur which will increase the income of the farmers immensely".

According to sources the Hathei Chilli is known as the God's gift and the pride of Ukhrul. It mainly cultivates in Mahadev hills surrounding the remote Tangkhul Naga inhabited Sirarakhong village in Ukhrul district.

The people cultivates these Chilli in jhum system.

Earleir, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh flagged off a consignment 10 MT of Chak-hao rice which was sent off to be exported to European countries. The flagging off ceremony took place in the presence of Agriculture, Veterinary & Animal Husbandry & Tourism Minister of Manipur, Oinam Lukhoi Singh. The Chief Minister had shared the news on social media from his official Twitter handle. He also praised the youths of the state who were making efforts to market Chak-hao rice outside of Manipur.

The tweet read, "I'm glad to flagged off a consignment of 10 MT Chak-hao in presence of Hon'ble Minister, Sh @LukhoiOinam Ji. Chak-Hao, a GI tagged crop of Manipur, is becoming one of the most popular rice. I'm happy that many youths have started ventures to market these crops outside Manipur."
