Manipur: 7 Killed, Several Missing After Landslide Strikes Noney District

The incident took place on the midnight of June 29 when the landslide occurred at Tupul yard railway construction camp which is located near the Makhuam area.

Imphal: In a tragic incident, a massive landslide struck Noney district of Manipur on June 29, leaving almost seven people dead.

Thirteen people have reportedly been rescued thus far while around 20 people still remain missing.

The incident took place at the midnight on June 29 when the landslide occurred at Tupul yard railway construction camp which is located near the Makhuam area.

Major rescue operations have been launched by the army, Assam Rifles, Manipur Police, and locals on June 30.

As per officials, helicopters will be called in so as to carry out rescue operations as soon as the weather becomes clear.

The landslide has caused a blockage to the Ezei river, which flows in the district.

The identity of the deceased person whose body was recovered on June 30 is yet to be ascertained.

Officials have informed that defence personnel belonging to the 107th Territorial Army of the Indian Army were deployed near the Tupul Railway Station in Noney district for the protection of a railway line that was still under construction from Jiribam to Imphal.

According to reports, all the injured persons received treatment at Noney Army Medical whereas the critically injured personnel were shifted to Imphal.

Officials added that fresh landslides coupled with harsh weather have hampered the rescue operations and the army choppers are on standby and are waiting for the weather to clear.

Officials have further said that an effort is underway to rescue the missing individuals.

Meanwhile, the office of the deputy commissioner of Noney has released a press release pertaining to this matter.
