Manipur Man Sentenced to 14 Years in Jail for Sexually Assaulting His Niece

IMPHAL: T Guite, 41, was condemned to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) by a special court on Thursday for being accused of raping a juvenile in Churachandpur district in October 2016.

The special court in command of the district's Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses programme additionally fined the offender Rs 25,000. (POCSO).

As per the official, if the defendant seems unable to pay the fine, the court would condemn him to an additional three months of simple imprisonment. On Tuesday, the court found the defendants guilty under Section 4 of the POCSO Act of 2012.

The perpetrator is the victim's uncle, according to reports, and he reportedly raped her when other members of the family were not there.

The judgment further instructed that the penalty be placed with the court right once and that the money be provided to the sufferer as reimbursement. It specified that the time the criminal spent in judicial custody in connection with the incident would be subtracted from the punishment.

Furthermore, under the Manipur Victim Compensation Scheme, 2019, the court recommended that the victim be rewarded with Rs 5 lakh. On October 15, 2016, a lawsuit was registered against Guite at the Churachandpur women's police station, according to sources. During the trial, the court recorded the evidence of 11 prosecution witnesses, including the victim.

In national news, two government physicians were arrested on suspicion of raping a colleague. According to reports, the alleged doctors were arrested and sent to jail on Thursday.

In the victim's complaint, the lady said that the offender broke into her room at midnight when she was alone and assaulted her. Following the incident, the victim took a long leave of absence. She returned to duty in October.

The victim filed a complaint with the Chennai City Police Commissioner. Based on her allegations, a lawsuit was filed against the defendant at the Flower Bazar police station.
