Imphal: Assam Rifles along with Manipur Police on Tuesday seized a huge contraband of brown sugar worth Rs 17.20 crore in Manipur's Tengnoupal district.
Both Assam Rifles and Manipur police conducted a search operation at the Moreh's friendhsip Bridge in the district and seized 8.60 kgs of brown sugar.
"ASSAM RIFLES FOILS CROSS BORDER SMUGGLING OF NARCOTICS #AssamRifles, on 23 Aug, in a joint operation with Manipur Police foiled cross border smuggling of narcotics and recovered 8.60 kgs of brown sugar worth Rs 17.20 Crore at Friendship Bridge, Moreh, Tengnoupal Dist, Manipur," Assam Rifles tweeted.
After the seizure, the recovered items were handed over to Moreh Police for further investigation.
In July this year, Brown Sugar worth Rs 1 crore was seized and a person was apprehended in Assam's Hojai district.
As per reports, acting on a tip-off, the police seized 983gm of brown sugar from a house in Lumding's South Hill Colony in the district.
The arrested person was identified as Deabash Hore who allegedly brought the drugs from Dimapur to Hojai by train with the motive of selling them.
Besides this, the Government Railway Police (GRP) too seized opium worth Rs 1.4 crore and also apprehended two persons from Bihar in connection with the seizure.
The nabbed persons were identified as Abhyas Kumar and Sunil Kumar after they were seen in a suspicious manner at Guwahati Railway Station.
Upon frisking them, the GRP recovered over 2 kilograms of opium from their undergarments.
