IMPHAL: In response to the escalating ethnic violence in Manipur, Chief Minister N Biren Singh emphasized the imperative nature of rehabilitating those displaced by the turmoil. The Chief Minister made this assertion on August 23rd while officially inaugurating temporary shelter homes for the affected families within the Sajiwa jail complex located in the Imphal East district.

Highlighting the state government's commitment, CM Biren Singh informed that six temporary shelter homes were strategically erected across various districts of Manipur. With a collective capacity of accommodating approximately 400 individuals, these shelter homes came to fruition at an estimated expenditure of around Rs 149 crore. Notably, a sum of Rs 101 crore had already been allocated from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to support the construction efforts.

The ethnic clashes in Manipur resulted in the displacement of about 50,650 people hailing from diverse communities. This upheaval led to the establishment of around 350 relief camps, housed in educational institutions, government edifices, and auditoriums, to provide temporary refuge.

CM Biren Singh underscored the significance of these efforts, stating, “The Manipur government has successfully unveiled the temporary shelter home at Sajiwa jail complex for the initial wave of displaced families.” He further expressed intentions to inaugurate similar facilities in other districts of Manipur, spanning both the hill and valley regions, in the coming weeks.

With a focus on immediate relief, the shelter homes at the Sajiwa jail complex are intended to harbor 380 displaced families primarily from Ekou and Dolaithabi. These homes are poised to offer a safe and secure environment for families directly impacted by the recent conflicts.

To provide context, the escalation of ethnic conflicts between the Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur ignited the volatile situation on May 3rd. The resulting violence, spanning nearly four months, led to a devastating toll of over 150 lives lost and thousands more being uprooted from their homes.

In a bid to restore stability and provide essential support to those affected, Manipur's Chief Minister N Biren Singh's proactive measures in establishing temporary shelter homes represent a crucial step toward addressing the immediate needs of the displaced families.
