IMPHAL: In a significant legal development in Manipur, a fast-track court has delivered justice by awarding a 10-year rigorous imprisonment sentence to a 36-year-old man who sexually assaulted a 10-year-old girl. The verdict came from Special Judge Fast Track Special Court Number I, who also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the convicted individual, identified as Konthoujam Robindro and a resident of Manipur's Bishnupur district.

The case traces back to June 6, 2018, when the victim's mother filed a complaint with the Bishnupur Women's Police Station, reporting that Robindro had sexually assaulted her daughter on June 4. The court's verdict on Thursday included a provision to commute the 6 months and 20 days that the accused had already spent in judicial custody from the total sentence period.

Furthermore, the court directed the awarding of Rs 1 lakh to the victim under the Manipur Government Victim Compensation Fund or any other relevant schemes to support her recovery and well-being. This move reflects the court's commitment to not only serving justice but also recognizing the needs of the survivor in such cases.

The investigating officer from Bishnupur police station had submitted a charge sheet against the convict, citing violations of Section 366-A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, for a full-fledged trial. The court, during its hearings, meticulously observed that the prosecution had successfully established the charges against the convict, leading to his conviction under both Section 366-A of the IPC and Section 4 of the POCSO Act, which deal with sexual assault of minors.

This landmark verdict underscores the importance of a swift and effective judicial system in addressing cases of sexual assault and abuse, particularly when the victims are minors. It sends a strong message that such heinous crimes will not go unpunished, providing hope to survivors and their families that justice can be served.

In a society where child protection is of paramount concern, the Manipur court's decision sets a precedent for the prosecution of offenders and the support for survivors, emphasizing the critical role of the legal system in safeguarding the rights and safety of children.
