IMPHAL : Security agencies in Manipur have seized smuggled gold bars worth Rs 54.11 lakhs on Tuesday. The bars were smuggled from Myanmar as per official sources.
Two international women gold smugglers were apprehended in relation with the matter. The arrest was made in Tengnoupal district of Manipur bordering Myanmar. The recovery was made by troopers of 20 Assam Rifles. They were assigned at Khudengthabi area of Tengnoupal district.
Later that day, the two female gold smugglers surrendered to the Customs Preventive Force for the further process. According to the reports, the van carrying the illegal items was approaching from Moreh and was going towards Imphal.
The troops intercepted the vehicle and checked after which they recovered the items. Sources stated that, the force received information from intelligence inputs that revealed about 6 smuggled gold bars weighing approximately 1 kg. The amount of the bars was assessed to be worth Rs 54.11 lakhs according to international market.
The interception was made based on this information. Moreover, along with the gold bars, the team also recovered two mobile phones and some sort of incriminating documents from the possession of the smugglers.
Unfortunately, Manipur has become the hub of contrabands items. The reason behind this is the shared border with Myanmar. All sort of illicit items that includes drugs of different kinds are smuggled from Myanmar and brought into the state.
Two days prior to this incident, Manipur police nabbed two drug peddlers, one of which was a woman. A team of commandos caught this activity while checking a grand tata sumo, that came from Tengnoupal region. The police commandos recovered 55 soup cases and two bottles of mineral water that contained heroin in it.
State Governor, La Ganesan recently showed his concern about the youths of Manipur. Despite the efforts made by the administration against drugs, numerous drug seizure has been reported in the state.
