IMPHAL: In a groundbreaking endeavor, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has initiated "Jal Diwali" as part of the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and the National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM). Operating under the theme "Water for Women, Women for Water campaign," the campaign was officially launched in Imphal, aiming to empower women with essential knowledge about water management.
As part of this unique initiative, members of women's Self Help Groups (SHGs) were taken on an enlightening tour of Water Treatment Plants (WTP). These visits provided them with a firsthand understanding of how these plants operate and the intricate processes involved in ensuring clean and safe water supply to urban areas.
The exposure visits, conducted on Thursday, were centered around the Water Treatment Plants located at Chingkheiching and Porompat in Imphal East District. This collaborative effort was orchestrated by the State Mission Director of AMRUT in Manipur and the State Mission Director of Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana DAY-NULM, in conjunction with the Public Health Engineering Department of Manipur. A significant number of women from various SHGs actively participated in these informative excursions.
The initiative's primary objective is to foster awareness among women about the judicious use of water. The Minister emphasized that climate change has amplified the challenges of water scarcity, making it imperative to comprehend effective water management practices.
Given that women play a pivotal role in water management at the household level, empowering them with knowledge about water treatment plant operations and machinery types will facilitate the sensible and efficient use of water resources. "Jal Diwali" is poised to make a significant impact by equipping women with the understanding and tools to contribute to responsible water management practices at the grassroots level.
