IMPHAL: Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey has visited the families of two youths who were tragically killed after being allegedly kidnapped, an incident that triggered violent protests in the northeastern state. The governor met with the bereaved family members of the two students at their residences in Imphal West district on Friday, according to a statement issued by the Raj Bhavan.

On Tuesday, fresh wave of violence erupted in the state capital, Imphal, just after images of the bodies of the two youths, who had gone missing in July, circulated widely on social media.

The official Raj Bhavan statement noted, "The governor consoled the parents of the two students and provided water to the mothers who had been on a fast for many days."

Governor Uikey expressed her sorrow and extended her condolences to the grieving families. She also assured them that appropriate action would be taken against the culprits in accordance with the law.

Meanwhile, Uikey was also briefed by local residents about the reported use of excessive force by security personnel against the students who had staged protests on Tuesday in response to the killing of the two youths.

Currently, a team from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is conducting an investigation into the deaths of the two students—a young man and a young woman—in the northeastern state, which has been grappling with ethnic tensions for nearly five months.

The state government established a committee on Thursday to investigate allegations of the excessive use of force by security forces against protesters, predominantly students, over the past two days, as confirmed by an official.

During a media briefing, Governor Uikey appealed to parents to "advise the students to engage in peaceful forms of protest and refrain from taking the law into their own hands, as injuries sustained during such protests can have long-term consequences on the students' futures," as stated in the Raj Bhavan release.

Later in the evening, the governor visited injured students who had taken part in the protests and met with their parents at Shija Hospital, Langol. She provided financial assistance to them, wishing for their swift recovery and ensuring them of necessary medical support.
