IMPHAL: In response to protests staged by Kuki-Zo medical students on Tuesday, Manipur's Health Minister Sapam Ranjan revealed on Wednesday that Manipur University is awaiting guidance from the National Medical Commission (NMC) regarding the conduction of examinations for all medical students. The concern revolves around the state's current situation, emphasizing the need for a careful approach.
Addressing the media at his residence, Minister Ranjan emphasized the government's commitment to the welfare of all students. He categorically denied allegations that Churachandpur MBBS students from the Kuki-Zo community were being denied the opportunity to take their Phase-1 examinations, asserting that the government has been actively working to ensure students receive their academic knowledge, particularly following the May 3 incident.
The minister proposed the possibility of a special examination based on the advice of the NMC, underscoring the importance of considering the views and suggestions of the NMC, given that all medical colleges in Manipur fall under its purview. He clarified that Manipur University, being a Central university, oversees four medical colleges in the state, namely RIMS, JNIMS, Shija Academy of Medical Sciences, and Churachandpur Medical College.
Minister Ranjan highlighted ongoing communication with the NMC, revealing a letter received on November 13, stating no objection if displaced students are from the parent college or different colleges. However, he stressed the necessity for the university to make decisions in consultation with colleges and authorities.
Acknowledging the upcoming second-year examinations in December for the three medical colleges, the minister expressed the need for concrete advice from the NMC. He pointed out the significance of attendance and internal assessment in evaluating students, suggesting that these aspects may be subject to relaxation based on NMC guidance.
The minister disclosed efforts to address concerns, including the request for dual campuses for Churachandpur medical students, which has been approved by the NMC. He reassured the public that the government is committed to ensuring the smooth continuation of academic activities for all medical students in Manipur, emphasizing the collaborative approach with the NMC to navigate challenges and make informed decisions in the best interest of the students.
