IMPHAL: In a significant operation carried out in a sensitive border state in India, Indian paramilitary personnel have successfully foiled a major attempt at smuggling areca nuts. Official sources reported this development on Monday, revealing that a group of six individuals has been apprehended on charges of areca nut smuggling. Additionally, six heavy vehicles suspected of being used in the smuggling operation were impounded.
The operation, conducted by the Assam Rifles, resulted in the seizure of approximately 42 tonnes of areca nuts, locally known as "supari," with an estimated value of around Rs. 16.80 crore in the regional markets. This accomplishment was made public through a statement from the defense wing.
The successful operation was initiated based on intelligence gathered from reliable sources. A Mobile Vehicle Check Post (MVCP) was strategically established in the General Area of Chandrakhong, which is situated in the Thoubal District of Manipur, a state located in the northeastern region of India.
Indian paramilitary troopers, who are renowned for their dedication and commitment to safeguarding the nation's borders, effectively thwarted the smuggling attempt. They apprehended the alleged smugglers, ensuring that they could no longer proceed with their illicit activities.
In addition to detaining the individuals involved in the smuggling operation, the authorities also took control of the vehicles suspected of being connected to the crime. All of these apprehended individuals, along with the seized areca nuts and vehicles, were subsequently handed over to the Forest Department in Maya Keithal, Thoubal District, for further legal proceedings.
