IMPHAL: In a significant development, Justice Siddharth Mridul has officially assumed the role of Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, culminating a prolonged waiting period that spanned more than three months. This appointment, which had been recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium back in July, finally garnered the attention of the Indian government. On October 9, a Supreme Court bench acknowledged the imminent notification of the appointment.

The Supreme Court Collegium, presided over by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, initially put forth the name of Justice Siddharth Mridul, a seasoned judge of the Delhi High Court, as the ideal candidate for the crucial position of Chief Justice in the Manipur High Court. This recommendation came at a time when Manipur was grappling with significant ethnic unrest along its borders.

The President of India, exercising his constitutional authority, formally appointed Justice Siddharth Mridul as the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court. This appointment came after a consultation process with the Chief Justice of India, marking an important step in the country's judicial landscape. The announcement was shared by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who extended his best wishes to Justice Siddharth Mridul for his new role.

This appointment holds great significance, given the prevailing conditions in Manipur. The border state had been experiencing ethnic turmoil, making the role of the Chief Justice pivotal in addressing and resolving the complex issues that had arisen. Justice Siddharth Mridul, with his experience and expertise, is expected to bring stability and direction to the legal matters affecting the state.

The prolonged delay in confirming the appointment had raised concerns and led to discussions within the legal community and among those closely following the developments. With the official announcement, these concerns are put to rest, and the Manipur High Court can now move forward with its judicial activities under the leadership of Chief Justice Siddharth Mridul.

The appointment of Justice Siddharth Mridul as the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, after a considerable delay, reflects the critical role that the judiciary plays in addressing complex issues in the region. It is hoped that his tenure will bring about positive changes and contribute to the resolution of ethnic unrest in Manipur, thus ensuring a more stable and just environment in the state.
