Manipur: Teen declared dead by RIMS found alive during funeral preparations

The boy was declared brought dead by a private hospital in Imphal for the second time.

A 16-year-old boy from Manipur's Thoubal district was declared dead at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Imphal, was found alive while the family was preparing for his funeral. However, the boy later passed away at a private hospital on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Elangbam Mocha, 16, son of Elangbam Ningthem of Heirok Part-II.

Mocha sustained injuries after he was kicked by a stray pony, on Tuesday around 4 pm and he was rushed to the Community Health Centre (CHC) of Heirok on the following day after the injuries to his abdomen worsened. From there, he was referred to Thoubal district hospital, where he was again referred to RIMS Imphal.

On Thursday, Mocha was admitted to the RIMS ICU ward, where he was declared dead around 10.30 am. According to the death certificate issued by RIMS, Mocha died of 'hypovolemic shock' due to blunt trauma in the abdomen.

According to one of the deceased's family members, Mocha had undergone a minor operation for removal of a blood clot and the family was told to arrange for blood transfusion, and amid the rush, the doctors told us he has expired. Mocha was later taken home for his last rites. However, to their astonishment, his family members noticed a rise in his body temperature. The family immediately called a nurse from the CHC to check and found the boy's pulse is still active. The family then rushed Mocha to Thoubal district hospital. Here, he was once again referred to Shija Hospital and Research Institute, Langol in Imphal as the district hospital has no ICU facility. Unfortunately, the hospital declared him brought dead.

The teenager's family has said that the RIMS authority should be held responsible for his death.
