IMPHAL: In a recent tragic incident in Manipur's Kangpokpi district, a 21-year-old man, Khupminthang Haokip, lost his life in a fatal shooting. The incident unfolded at 2:45 am near Joupi, a village predominantly inhabited by the Kuki-Zomi community, situated approximately 8 km west of the Meitei-dominated Bishnupur district. Security forces swiftly initiated combing operations in response to the alarming incident that lasted for about 45 minutes, concluding around 3:30 am.
According to a security official, suspicions arise that the firing may have originated from individuals who crossed the buffer zone between areas dominated by different communities. This grim event follows earlier reports of two individuals from the Kuki-Zomi community being killed in the same district, believed to be the result of an ambush attack. In protest, the Committee on Tribal Unity declared a 48-hour shutdown in the district, intensifying their demand for a separate administration for Kuki-Zomi territories.
Khupminthang Haokip, the deceased, was identified as a Kuki-Zomi village volunteer, adding a poignant dimension to the tragedy.
