IMPHAL: In a positive turn of events amidst the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, Assam Rifles has played a crucial role in assisting the repatriation of more than 200 displaced individuals. These individuals had been forced to flee their homes since the eruption of the conflict on May 3, seeking refuge across the border in Myanmar. The repatriation efforts have brought them back to the state's relief camp, offering a glimmer of hope in the midst of turmoil.
The collaboration between Assam Rifles and local authorities has resulted in the successful return of over 400 individuals from Myanmar to Manipur. In the most recent repatriation operation, a group of 89 females and 37 children were safely brought back from Myanmar's Tamu to Manipur's Moreh. This commendable effort by Assam Rifles has garnered optimism for the restoration of stability and harmony in the region.
The violence, which ignited on May 3, led to the displacement of numerous people, especially those from tribal communities. Fleeing the clashes between the Meiteis and Kukis, many sought shelter in neighboring states like Assam and Mizoram. Tragically, the conflict has resulted in the loss of more than 160 lives and left hundreds injured.
In response to the escalating security situation, a Border Security Force (BSF) team is reportedly set to be stationed in the Thawai Kuki village within Manipur's Ukhrul district. This decision follows a recent incident where three individuals were killed in a gunfight, and their mutilated bodies were discovered. Security forces are actively searching the surrounding forests for armed individuals believed to be in hiding.
The move to deploy BSF personnel in various districts of Manipur, totaling around 60 companies, is aimed at supporting the administration in restoring and maintaining law and order. This decision comes in the wake of Chief Minister N Biren Singh's inquiry into the public display of sophisticated firearms by a group of individuals during an Independence Day parade.
Recently, BSF (EC) ADG Sonali Mishra, along with four senior officers, held discussions with Governor Anusuiya Uikey, apprising her of the current security situation in the strife-torn state. These collaborative efforts between security forces, local authorities, and central government bodies highlight the collective commitment to stabilize the situation and pave the way for lasting peace in Manipur.
