IMPHAL: In a significant development, the Assam Rifles, a paramilitary force, has been withdrawn from the main battle zone at the interdistrict of Bishnupur and Churachandpur in Manipur, effective from Monday. This decision comes in response to the demands of several women vigilante groups who called for the withdrawal after the Assam Rifles' involvement in a contentious incident on August 3. During the incident, the paramilitary force used blank fire and tear gas against a group of women protesters, resulting in injuries to over 50 women.

The order to withdraw the Assam Rifles was issued on Monday by Additional Director General of Manipur Police (Law and Order) L Lailun. As a replacement, the responsibility of manning the check post at Moirang Lamkhai on the Bishnupur to Kangvai road has been assigned to Manipur Police and CRPF (128 Battalion of CRPF), effective immediately and until further notice.

The decision to withdraw the Assam Rifles comes at a critical time for Manipur, as the state has been grappling with ongoing ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities. The violence has resulted in a staggering toll of over 160 lives lost and more than 60,000 people displaced from their homes.

The August 3 incident, where the Assam Rifles' actions led to injuries to numerous women protesters, triggered widespread outrage and condemnation. In response to the incident, several women vigilante groups demanded the complete withdrawal of the paramilitary force from the state. Their demands have now been met, as the Assam Rifles has been replaced by the Manipur Police and CRPF in the critical Moirang Lamkhai check post.

However, the state remains in a tense and volatile situation, with ethnic clashes continuing to pose a significant threat to peace and security. The authorities will now face the challenge of maintaining stability and preventing further violence with the new arrangements in place.

In conclusion, the withdrawal of the Assam Rifles from the main battle zone in Manipur marks a crucial development following the demands of women vigilante groups. The decision comes amidst escalating ethnic clashes in the state, which have led to numerous casualties and displacement. With the Manipur Police and CRPF taking over responsibilities at the Moirang Lamkhai check post, all eyes are now on their ability to restore calm and ensure the safety of the affected communities.
