IMPHAL: The two months old conflict in the Northeastern state of Manipur is far from over as at least four more people have lost their lives in the past day in the state. These include one teenager and one police person. Several other people have been injured in clashes in the bordering region of Bishnupur and Churachandpur. The death of the policeperson took place during a gunfight on Friday afternoon, while three additional deaths were reported on Saturday morning.

Speaking about these deaths, the Indian Army has mentioned that the Kangvai locality of the Bishnupur district has been a very sensitive area since the start of the conflict. The security forces had created a Buffer Zone in the region and deployed additional forces to prevent any further escalation of the conflict. But miscreants from both sides of the conflict try to find their way to fire at each other.

A similar attempt was made by mods on both sides on Friday night and they did not listen to the requests of the local people and this latter resulted in the exchange of gunfire at the location. This led to the death of three people and the injury of several others. The conflict took place in the Kangvai, Songdo and Awang Lekhai villages of the state.

Firing between both parties ceased in the early hours of the day. But the local people continue to block the movement of security forces for reinforcing the positions. Efforts are underway to restore peace between the community in the region. An official statement released by the Manipur police said that the situation is tense in some places. Sporadic incidents of firing were reported along with the assembly of several unruly mobs in different localities. The authorities are trying to dismantle the bunkers used by the miscreants during these incidents.
