IMPHAL: A mob clashed with police as the bodies of two individuals killed in a gunfight in Kangpokpi district were carried to Khwairanband Bazaar on Thursday evening, sparking new unrest in Imphal, Manipur.

When the police attempted to stop the community members from carrying the bodies in a procession to the Chief Minister's mansion, they were forced to employ tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. A BJP office was also attacked in the commotion.

On June 29, at around 4 PM, a sizable crowd, including youngsters, attacked the BJP office in the Bishnupur district. An angry mob burned effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and CM Biren Singh in front of the Bishnupur district police station at around 4 PM, damaging the BJP office and denouncing the obstruction Congress leader Rahul Gandhi experienced while travelling from Moirang to Churachanpur.

According to sources, the mob attempted to set the local BJP office on fire, and in the process, half of the office was damaged. On the other side, police stopped and scattered them with numerous rounds of tear gas shells.

The crowd chanted "Narendra Modi Down Down, Amit Shah Down Down" as well. In a separate incident, police deployed multiple bursts of tear gas to disperse a mob that had formed near the BJP regional office in Imphal, Manipur. Many people apparently attempted to remove the police roadblock so that Rahul Gandhi could pass freely, however, Bishnupur District police officers stopped Rahul Gandhi's convoy and police fired a number of tear gas shells to scatter the Congress leader's followers.

In a television interview, MPCC President K Meghachandra stated that the police action of obstructing Rahul Gandhi's visit to Churachanpur district was a breach of Indian democratic norms. The Congress leader will meet with several civil society organisations, student leaders, and stakeholders on June 30 at the Hotel Imphal in Sangai Hall to explore ways to promote peace in the state.
