IMPHAL: A large crowd of over 1,000 people invaded the home of a Union Minister in Manipur Friday night, in the latest incidence of violence in the northeast state, which has seen conflicts between two factions over the demand for inclusion in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category. According to sources, Union Minister RK Ranjan Singh was not there at the time of the event in Imphal.

According to sources, Union Minister RK Ranjan Singh was not at home at the time of the event. Miscreants also set fire to State Minister and BJP leader Nemcha Kipgen's house earlier this week.

Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has stated that the government is holding conversations at several levels and has promised that anyone involved in violence will face consequences.

Despite Imphal's curfew, the mob managed to reach the minister's house in Kongba. At the time of the event, the minister's residence had nine security escort workers, five security guards, and eight additional guards on duty.

According to a security guard at the minister's residence, the mob flung petrol bombs from all directions during the attack.

This is the second time in a month that Singh's residence has been stormed by a mob. In May of this year, a crowd of Meitei men and women attacked the MP's house — who is also from the same group — in protest of the deaths in the Manipur conflict.

Following the unrest, Home Minister Amit Shah visited Manipur for four days beginning May 29 and pledged a series of initiatives to bring the state back to calm. He met with Chief Minister N Biren Singh, representatives of various political parties, civil society, women, and tribal organisations, as well as senior government officials. In addition, Shah announced the formation of a peace committee in the state.
