IMPHAL: In Imphal West, Manipur, a woman was tragically shot on Thursday morning at around 8:40 AM close to Shishu Nishtha Niketan school, according to reports.

The deceased has been taken into custody by the police, who have also put her remains in the mortuary. The victim's identity and the perpetrators' whereabouts is the subject of their present investigations. Since the outbreak of ethnic violence on May 3, 2023, all schools in Manipur have been closed. With daily reports of acts of violence, arson, and vandalism, the situation in Manipur continues to be tumultuous.

After being shut down for more than two months as a result of the ethnic violence that broke out in the mountainous state on May 3, the schools run by the Manipur government's Department of Education (Schools) reopened on Wednesday and began their regular sessions for sessions 1 through 8.

According to sources aware of the positive development, the decision was made with the welfare of the students in mind. They added that the parents and guardians of the students are pleased that the schools have reopened after a protracted summer break. On the other hand, in the Bishnupur district, unidentified criminals opened fire on village volunteers, authorities reported on Sunday, resulting in at least three fatalities.

The incident happened a little after midnight on Sunday in the village of Khoijumantabi, which is located on the border of the Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts.

Three village volunteers from the area were murdered in the shooting, which was followed, according to the police, by an operation that forced the armed criminals to leave. In order to stop outsiders from entering the village, the volunteers from the community were guarding the main route from a bunker.

N Biren Singh, the chief minister of Manipur, visited the scene with security forces to assess the situation.

In the meantime, according to the police, five civilians who were purportedly detained by villagers in the Yaingangpokpi police station's Gwaltabi and Urangpat regions a day earlier were rescued by security personnel on Sunday and given to the station's officer-in-charge.
