Manipur Woman Shot Dead Amidst Argentina's World Cup Victory Celebration

The woman's body was taken for an autopsy at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in the Imphal East district.

IMPHAL: Police claimed on Monday that an unidentified person, who was celebrating Argentina's victory in the FIFA World Cup final, is suspected of being responsible for the tragic death of a 50-year-old woman in Manipur after she was struck by a stray bullet.

The woman's husband claims that as they were celebrating Argentina's victory against France, they also heard what sounded like gunshots and the sound of firecrackers from a tyre shop close to his home.

The woman was struck by the bullet and was later discovered unconscious. The woman's body was taken for an autopsy at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in the Imphal East district.

On Monday, locals of Bheigyabati Leikai protested the occurrence and demanded an exhaustive investigation. In the meantime, an investigation is ongoing after Manipur police filed a case in connection with the incident.

 "We've opened an investigation into the event," said a police officer.

As per the sources, according to a report by Women Action Development (WAD), there were 148 cases of crimes against women in Manipur in 2021, indicating that both gender-specific and general crimes are on the rise in the state. According to a report based on data from news articles published that year, there was an increase in rape incidents as well.

The biggest percentage of domestic abuse offences were reported to the Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW), which recorded 83 cases of crimes against women in 2021.

Imphal West, where there have been 31 reported crimes, has the highest rate, followed by Imphal East and Bishnupur, where there have been 15 and 8 reported crimes, respectively. The least amount of crime—one—was committed in Tengnoupal. In comparison to Kakching and Churachandpur, Thoubal had a crime rate of six, whereas Kakching and Churachandpur had a crime rate of four.

Community-wise, the "generic" category community, and the "schedule tribes" were where the majority of crimes occurred. The "scheduled tribe" was responsible for 16 cases of crime, whereas the "general" community was responsible for 45 cases. Scheduled Caste and Muslims were responsible for two and seven percent of crimes, respectively, while other communities were responsible for three percent.
