Imphal: Manipur's titular king and Rajya Sabha MP Sanajaoba Leishemba on Thursday wrote to Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal to include Manipuri language as an associate official language of Assam.
He appealed to Assam government on behalf of the Manipuri people living in Assam.
He went out to make the proposal being their King as well as lone Rajya Sabha MP of Manipur.
Sanajaoba also urged Sarbananda to fulfill the demand of Manipuri People of Assam i.e. "Inclusion of Manipuri Language as an Associate official Language of Assam".
In his letter to Assam CM, he wrote, "If you do so, not only the Manipuris of Assam but Manipuris all over the world will be indebted to you and your government. This would be able to protect the identity, history, culture and tradition of Manipuri in Assam. Moreover the historic love, bond and relationship of Manipur and Assam would be strengthened."
Recently in Rajya Sabha sitting, Sanajaoba had also requested the speaker to grant classical status to Manipuri language as a modern Indian language.
It is to be mentioned that there are about 102 Manipuri medium schools recognised by the Assam government in Assam and Manipuri language has been taught in the schools since 1956.
