IMPHAL: In a recent development, the Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) conducted an extensive evaluation of the living conditions at the Detention Center within Sajiwa jail in the Imphal East district. Led by Utpalendu Bikas Saha, a retired Judge of the High Court of Tripura and the Chairperson of MHRC, a team from the commission engaged with the Myanmar nationals held at the facility, offering an insight into their plight.
At present, the Detention Center houses a total of 105 Myanmar nationals, including six children and 24 women. During their interaction with the inmates, the MHRC officials discovered that two of the women were in the advanced stages of pregnancy, emphasizing the pressing need for proper medical care. The commission's visit was accompanied by local journalists, ensuring transparency and dissemination of the assessment's outcomes.
The inspection revealed a series of concerning issues.
