IMPHAL: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken significant action in Manipur, filing a charge sheet against three individuals, including a Myanmar national and two militants, for their involvement in extortion activities carried out by a banned rebel outfit. The arrests were made during well-executed raids conducted by a joint team comprising the NIA Imphal branch and personnel from the 5th Assam Rifles. These operations took place in multiple locations in Moreh town, which shares a border with Myanmar. The NIA's decisive move follows extensive investigations into a case related to terror funding for a Manipur-based underground organization.

On the day of the raids, a substantial amount of Rs 30 lakh was seized from the possession of the three accused individuals. The NIA, with solid evidence and a strong case, filed the charge sheet at an NIA special court in Imphal, Manipur. The charges include several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (UAPA). Additionally, the Myanmar national, identified as Deepak Sharma alias Khinmanung, faces additional charges under the Foreigner Act of 1946.

The investigations carried out thus far have shed light on the modus operandi of the banned outfits. It has been revealed that the militants associated with these organizations resorted to extortion as a means of raising funds for their activities. They targeted the residents of Imphal, Manipur, making threatening calls and demanding money. This pattern of extortion is a clear indication of the desperate measures these rebel groups are willing to take to finance their operations.

The joint efforts of the NIA and the 5th Assam Rifles have yielded significant results in curbing the activities of these proscribed militant organizations. By apprehending the three charge-sheeted individuals, including a foreign national, law enforcement agencies have sent a strong message that illegal activities will not go unpunished. The actions taken by the NIA highlight the government's commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region.

The charge sheet and subsequent legal proceedings will play a crucial role in ensuring that justice is served. This case serves as a stark reminder that the NIA remains vigilant in its pursuit of individuals and groups involved in unlawful activities, particularly those related to terrorism and organized crime. By exposing and prosecuting these wrongdoers, the NIA is making a significant contribution to maintaining the rule of law and safeguarding the well-being of the people.
