Senapati: Much to the relief of commuters and locals of Khongnem Thana in Imphal-Mao sector of National Highway 2, road construction work has begun to give an alternate route to the people of the area as this is a landslide prone area and often remains cut-off from the mainland due landslides that blocks the road and damages it too.

Khongnem Thana village is located around 72 km north of Manipur's capital city of Imphal and falls under the jurisdiction of Senapati district.

The project of construction of roads has been undertaken by the Bharat Infra Projects Limited (BIPL), a road construction agency. A new route will be constructed in the sunken portion of the highway, which is the main supply route of the state. It will take a week's time for the construction of the by-pass, said the officials.

The district administration is monitoring the entire situation. L Dikho, Manipur Public Health Engineering Minister inspected the ongoing road construction work on Sunday.

The incessant rains have caused a massive landslide at Khongnem Thana which has completely blocked the Imphal-Mao sector of the highway. Due to this, many Imphal-bound goods trucks remained stranded along the highway.

Meanwhile, in some news regarding the water levels of the rivers, according to the water resource department, most of the major rivers in the state are still flowing at the warning level, but the water levels in some of the rivers like Nambul and Imphal rivers have started to recede in the last 24 hours. There is no report of the river embankments being breached.
