Thokchom Satyabrata Singh Elected As New Manipur Assembly Speaker

The 48-year-old Singh successfully retained his Yaiskul constituency by defeating his nearest rival H Vikram of the National People’s Party (NPP) by 632 votes.

Imphal: Thokchom Satyabrata Singh was unanimously elected as the speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly on Thursday.

His election to the speaker's post was almost certain as he was the lone MLA from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The 48-year-old Singh successfully retained his Yaiskul constituency by defeating his nearest rival H Vikram of the National People's Party (NPP) by 632 votes.

Taking to the micro-blogging site Twitter, Singh thanked all the house members for unanimously choosing him as speaker.

Singh was a former cabinet minister in the previous BJP-led coalition government in Manipur.

Manipur Governor La Ganesan today addressed the assembly after the election of the new Speaker.

Addressing the newly formed assembly, Governor La Ganesan highlighted the work of the Biren Singh government during the last term.

Apart from this, the Manipur Governor thanked the elected MLAs for the successful conducting of the recent state elections.
