SHILLONG: Prestone Tynsong, Deputy Chief Minister and local MLA has informed that this year the government will install 7,000 solar street lights from Siatbakon to Usmyiem, Lyngkhat and Nongshken villages falling within Pynursla Constituency.

The Deputy Chief Minister said this after inaugurating the community-cum-multi-facility hall at Pongtung village on Wednesday.

Adressing the gathering on the occasion, Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner R. M. Kurbah urged the hardworking villagers to desist from taking up broomstick cultivation since this crop dries up water sources.

"Broomstick is a one-generation crop. Therefore for the benefit of the future generations other sustainable economic activities have to be taken up," she said.

The scheme on solar street lights was sanctioned during the earlier tenure of Kurbah as Director of the 'Border Area Development'.
