Shillong: The seizure of 95 coal-laden trucks during raids carried out by the East Jaintia Hills district administration and the police in the past one week demonstrated the indulgence of the mafia in the coal belts of Meghalaya. This comes despite the National Green Tribunal (NGT) ban on unscientific extraction of the black diamond and the restraint on transportation of the extracted coal.
Coal mining was banned by the NGT since 2014 but the tactful illegal transportation is evident when 95 unclaimed coal-laden trucks were found during the raids. On Tuesday, the police immediately registered cases under the Indian Penal Code, MMDR Act, and other relevant laws.
On Wednesday, the police found out that out of the 95 trucks seized, 56 trucks were registered in Assam, 25 trucks registered in Nagaland, 10 others from Meghalaya and one each registered in Mizoram and Tripura.
