SHILLONG: Acting on a tipoff, personnel of the West Garo Hills Police, on Thursday, nabbed seven armed persons and also seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition from their possession. The persons are part of a larger gang involved in a number of abduction and extortion cases, informed sources adding that most of the gang members are from various surrendered militant groups, including the GNLA.

"Our sources revealed that the victim was released on the evening of June 24 after the payment of ransom. Operations were intensified and we succeeded in nabbing the seven members of the gang," said SP, West Garo Hills, Dr MGR Kumar.

The huge cache of arms and ammunition seized from the seven persons include a carbine, three numbers of 7.6 mm Chinese-make pistols, four magazines, two live grenades and live ammunitions. Among the other items seized are two mobile phones, and ransom money of Rs 3, 26,500 received by the armed gang.

The arrested accused have been identified as Probitdro A Sangma (35) of Rombagre, Dipit Ch Marak (30) of Najing Bazaar, Tura, Pillington Ch Marak alias Rakcheng of Chiading in East Garo Hills, Dunia K Sangma (30) of Upper Babupara in Tura, Prewin R Sangma alias Walnang (35) of Chokpot, South Garo Hills, Rakseng Ch Marak alias Geloram (33) of Rongsak under Williamnagar Police Station in East Garo Hills and Bandi Ch Sangma from Asibra under Tura.

The Police team led by Tura SP comprised Deputy SP (HQ), CI Sadar, OC of Tura PS, in charge of Chandmary Beat House, and Rongram Outpost incharge among others.

In this connection a case registered in Tura Police Station and the accused have been forwarded to the Tura Court.
