SHILLONG: Siju MDC Albinush Marak has been elected as the next Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
Marak of the National People's Party (NPP) got 17 votes while All India Trinamool Congress' (TMC) Rinaldo K Sangma got 12 votes.
The MDCs of the GHADC took part in a secret ballot to elect the new CEM.
Marak took over as the next GHADC CEM after his colleague Rakesh Sangma submitted his resignation from the post of CEM to Governor Satya Pal Malik on February 28.
Pressure groups in the Garo Hills had accused Rakesh of not following Garo customs since his father was not a tribal.
For days, there were protests in Garo Hills region over the issue.
