SHILLONG: Former Chief Minister and leader of the Opposition Mukul Sangma said that he is very much in ground zero in overseeing the pandemic, besides attending to all party activities ahead of the District Council elections in Garo Hills. There were talks in certain circles about Mukul Sangma missing in action during the pandemic crisis.

"Mukul Sangma is in the right place — at ground zero in the western sector of Meghalaya," he stated during a telephonic interaction with The Sentinel on Thursday.

Besides claiming to be on ground zero, the Congress leader said that his stay in Garo Hills is in true adherence of the COVID-19 protocol to attend to the needs of the party ahead of the District Council polls in the Garo Hills. "We cannot send our party members to Shillong and later see them go for quarantine. It's for this reason that I'm in a place that is accessible to all. I'm also taking into account the ground zero situation of the pandemic in the 24 constituencies of the State,"stated Sangma who was also a physician by profession before he joined active politics.

He added, " We are preparing for the District Council polls to the 30-member Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC). He said that the Congress party is gauging the minds of the Congress workers so that all decisions can be taken through a collective leadership.

Questioning his critics, Mukul Sangma posed, "Have they visited the Garo Hills since the outbreak of the virus. Social, political and professional responsibilities and compulsions have made me stay in Garo Hills. I'm with the masses here."
