SHILLONG: Senior politician and nominated MDC at Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Bindo M Lanong has said that there is a need to remove the ‘black sheep’ within the Police department. Referring to allegations that some police men are involved in criminal activities across the State, he said thus at a public rally-cum-awareness programme on the dangers of drug addiction organized by Seng Samla Malki (SSM), at Malki ground.
“In the past it was found that some police personnel are also involved in stealing vehicles and other antisocial activities. And now, we are of the opinion that if the police are not involved then how has the menace of drugs witnessed increases every year, and why is there the inflow of drugs into Meghalaya?” Lanong posed.
Adding that “there are many good police officers and constables within the department”, Lanong however, stressed that “there is a need to uproot the ‘black sheep’ among them”. Lanong said that this issue should be raised by the MLAs and Ministers in the Legislative Assembly and the MDCs should also take up this issue in the upcoming KHADC session.
“The government should take a strong stand on this issue and the police should also carry out their duties,” he said.
He further said that if anyone is offered drugs then that person should immediately report the matter to the police or to the dorbar shnong so that the rampant growth in the use of drugs in the State can be effectively contained.
Referring to the ‘Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985’, Lanong said that there is a need to further strengthen the law. “There is a need to strengthen the laws of the police and the police should also work hard to eradicate this drug menace from the State,” he stressed.
