SHILLONG: The police on Monday had to cordon off the road leading to Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) at Lower Lachumiere after a bomb was detected in an abandoned bag in front of the office of the ruling National People's Party (NPP). This created panic amongst the government employees working in the area and passersby.

After receiving information the police rushed to the spot along with a team of Bomb Squad and sniffer dogs to defuse the bomb. The police are still investigating the matter further.

However, the banned outlawed group Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) claimed the responsibility for the attempted bombing, on a Facebook page. The page is opperated by publicity secretary of the banned outfit Sainkupar Nongtraw.

Meanwhile, National People's Youth Front (NPYF) president Nickey Nongkhlaw informed that they learned about the presence of an abandoned bag at around 2.30-3.00 PM and quickly informed the police.

"After this we evacuated the office and if the bomb had gone off it would have injured or killed many people. There is a lady who sells betel nuts opposite the NPP gate," he said.
