BSF arrests seized truck loaded with cattle near Umkiang

SHILLONG: On Tuesday, the BSF troops deployed at the Sonapur mobile check post in East Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya observed a truck loaded with cattle. BSF troops tried to stop the truck but the truck driver did not pay any heed and speedily crossed the check post.

The BSF troops pursued the truck and seized 20 cattle cramped in it, near Umkiang. All the cattle were tethered tightly with rope presenting cruelty and pathetic condition of the cattle.

The cattle were likely to be smuggled to Bangladesh. The truck along with the seized cattle was handed over to Meghalaya Police for further investigation, stated a release.

The Sonapur mobile check post falls under AOR of 97 Bn BSF. There are chance of spurt in cattle smuggling in view of incoming imminent festival of Bakr Id/Eid ul-Adha which is going to be observed in the last week of this month. Cattle sacrifice is an indispensable part of this festival celebrated zealously in Bangladesh.

In another instance, BSF troops of 43 Bn BSF deployed on the international border (IB) of South Garo Hills of Meghalaya seized miscellaneous items including bidis, shampoo, cream, soap and oil etc. worth more than Rs 90,000 approximately, which was later on handed over to the Customs department of Meghalaya government.

BSF DIG (PRO) UK Nayal, said, "The BSF is making its best efforts to curb smuggling activities on International Border (IB), and these efforts will continue.''
