BSF seized 57 tonnes of dry peas and 511 cattle in September

While smuggling activities along the Indo-Bangladesh Border had reduced considerably after the lockdown was imposed in March

SHILLONG: While smuggling activities along the Indo-Bangladesh Border had reduced considerably after the lockdown was imposed in March, the recent huge seizures made by Border Security Force (BSF) indicate a sharp increase in smuggling especially of cattle and dry peas.

During September alone, the BSF seized 57,100 kg of dry peas worth more than Rs 56 lakhs and 511 cattle head worth more than Rs 79 lakhs in East Khasi Hills, South Garo Hills, East Jaintia Hills and West Jaintia Hills, while these were being smuggled from Bangladesh to India.

UK Nayal, DIG/PRO, FTR HQ BSF, said, "As anticipated, there has been increased in smuggling as lockdown eased and further rise in various smuggling activities is expected in the coming months. The BSF troops deployed on the International Border are doing their duties despite the harsh weather conditions and the corona outbreak." He sought co-operation from civil authorities and Police in curbing cross-border smuggling in the State, stated a release.
