SHILLONG: The five Congress legislators in the State pledged their support to the National People's Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government on Tuesday.
The MLAs led by Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader, Ampareen Lyngdoh met Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and submitted a letter of support to the government.
"We wish to support you and the MDA to strengthen the government arms and decision making, so as to ensure that our joint efforts will take the State forward in the general interest of its citizens," the CLP said in its letter of support. Later speaking to the media after the meeting, Sangma said that the reason behind the move was to ensure at this juncture in politics that they have each other's back covered. "We are elected representatives by our respective constituencies and we take along the needs of our constituency," Lyngdoh said.
The CLP leader also informed that the Congress MLAs and the government also discussed other issues during the meeting. "We have been briefed about the levels of inter-state border dispute with Assam, we are also going to be briefed further about the other nitty-gritties of our two MLAs who are members of the two regional committees. We feel that at this juncture the interest of the State and the people of our constituencies is of paramount importance," she added. Interestingly, in the MDA, both the Congress and the BJP are coalition partners.
