SHILLONG: The COVID-19 pandemic has not deterred the Congress party from preparing itself for the elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) scheduled around October and November this year. Nothing definite is known about the State government's call on the elections that is usually held after the expiry of the Councils' tenures. But the Congress has already started the spade work to shortlist its candidates for the 30 seats in the Council. Sources in the Congress party added that the everything depends on Dr Mukul Sangma, who has been camping in Tura for the past couple of months. It is understood that Mukul Sangma, the present Leader of the Opposition will hold sway in determining the party candidates. Sangma during his interaction with The Sentinel conceded that he is always attending to presentations and small groups of delegations to discuss the prospect of wresting power in the GHADC by fielding formidable candidates. "I am here in Garo Hills to exactly work on a plan along with the party workers to win the elections to the GHADC whenever it is held," he said.
The GHADC is a sick and fund-starved institution that has witnessed four changes of gaurd in the past four years. The political scene has reached such a state that the elected BJP members aligned with the Congress.
