Conrad Sangma Stakes Claim to Meghalaya Government

SHILLONG: Conrad K Sangma, the leader of the National People’s Party tendered his resignation as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya. He also put forward his claim to forward the next government in the state.

Conrad K Sangma met with the governor of the state of Meghalaya Phagu Chauhan on Friday to submit his official claim to form the next Meghalaya government for another term. He is likely to take oath as the Meghalaya chief minister once again on March 7. He also mentioned that the prime minister of the country, Narendra Modi is expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony.

The National People’s Party had secured 26 seats for itself in the recently concluded polls in the state. While the state assembly has a total of 60 seats but the election was held only for 59 seats as the process had to be cancelled for a constituency because of the death of a candidate. Any leader would need the support of atleast 31 elected members to form the governement in the Northeastern state.

Conrad K Sangma had mentioned that he has the support of atleast 32 elected members in the assembly. But he declined to give out any details of the MLAs who are supporting the second term of him as the chief minister. "We have an absolute majority. The BJP has already extended its support. Some others have also given their support," he had mentioned.

Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress leader as well as a former chief minister of the state, Mukul Sangma had mentioned about forming a government in the state. He mentioned that all the parties except the National People’s Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party will come together to fgorm the state government. Now it remains to see which of the two Sangmas will be able to form a government in the state.
