Guwahati: In a significant achievement for the Medical fraternity of Meghalaya, a tumour weighing 24 kilos was successfully removed from the abdomen of a woman by doctors at a hospital in West Garo Hills district.
Officials said that the 37-year-old, who hails from Jamge village in East Garo Hills district was admitted at the Tura Maternity and Child Hospital on July 29 after she complained of severe abdominal pain.
The surgical procedure was conducted by a team of doctors including two gynaecologists in a nearly 3-hour operation on August 3, informed Hospital Superintendent Dr Icylda Sangma.
Sangma further informed mediapersons that the patient is "stable" as of now. However, the tumour has been sent for biopsy to find out whether it is cancerous.
Meanwhile, the doctors of the Tura Maternity and Child Hospital have been lauded by the state's Chief Minister Conrad Sangma himself. "A team of Doctors of the Tura District Maternity and Child Hospital (DMCH) successfully removed a 24kg Tumour from the abdomen of a patient from East Garo Hills. I congratulate Dr. Vince Momin and the Team for the successful operation and I wish the patient a speedy recovery," Sangma wrote in a tweet.
One of the doctors at the hospital also donated blood to the patient. Additionally, community members came forward to provide financial assistance to the patient, which was also lauded by the West Garo Hills district deputy commissioner Ram Singh.
"We got one female patient and she had tumour in the stomach. The team of doctors under the capable leadership of Dr. Vince Momin expertly removed the big tumour and it is all thanks to them that the tumour is removed", Singh told The Sentinel Digital.
