SHILLONG: The Dorbar Shnong Jaiaw Pyllun has withdrawn itself from the 'Peace Committee' constituted by the Government of Meghalaya. This was stated in a letter signed by PD Nongrum Chairman and S Pariat Secretary of the Dorbar Shnong Jaiaw Pyllunsent to the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills District, who is also the Member Secretary of the 'Peace Committee' on Wednesday.

The letter read, "With regards to the inclusion of the Rangbah Shnongs of the five Dorbar Shnongs of Jaiaw Pyllun — as members of the Peace Committee, though we highly appreciate this consideration it is felt that the Dorbar Shnong Jaiaw Pyllun can have a more meaningful discussion and contribute constructive suggestions/ideas towards building a better and safer city by involving themselves in a smaller and leaner Peace Committee, perhaps with members drawn from the Dorbar Shnong Jaiaw Pyllun, Lympung ki Hynriew Dorbar of Mawkhar, the Lympung Shiphew Dorbar of Lumdiengjri.

"A Peace Committee, as suggested, may be constituted for which the Dorbar Shnong Jaiaw Pyllun will be too willing to be a part of. It is with this consideration that the Dorbar Shnong Jaiaw Pyllun withdraws itself from the present Peace Committee as constituted by the GOM Home (Political) Dept," added the letter.

The Committee has expressed its concern on the current situation and stated that "as citizens of our beloved city Shillong, we are deeply saddened and concerned that, with the explosion of an IED at Laitumkhrah, the early dawn raid and the shooting down of Cherishterfield Thangkhiew at his house in Mawlai Kynton Massar, the peace and tranquility of Shillong City is shattered once again."

The Executive Committee of the Dorbar Shnong Jaiaw Pyllun comprising the five Dorbars, namely Jaiaw Laitdom, Jaiaw Langsning, Jaiaw Pdeng, Jaiaw Lansonalane, and Jaiaw Shyiap Lumpyllon on August 18 discuss on the prevailing law-and-order situation in the city and particularly in the localities around Jaiaw.

After thorough discussion, the committee is of the opinion that the major responsibility of restoring peace and normalcy in the city lies with the State Government and the Dorbar Shnongs are willing to work hand in hand with the District Administration towards achieving this end.
