Dumper Truck Hits Car On Shillong-Dawki Road; Narrow Escape For Passengers

A large number of vehicles were stranded on the highway because of the mishap and there were no reports of any casualties in the incident.

SHILLONG: Four persons escaped death narrowly after a car, in which they were travelling, was hit by a dumper truck on the Shillong-Dawki highway at Pynursla area in Meghalaya on Thursday. The Maruti Swift car, after receiving the jolt, skidded off and was almost about to fall into a ditch along the roadside, but somehow its wheels held the ground and it hanged over the deep gorge.

As per reports, the driver and the passenger who was in the front seat of the car were slightly injured, but the passengers on the car's back seat sustained critical injuries and they were taken to a local hospital after the accident. The dumper, which as per locals lost control (owing to which it hit the car), belongs to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited.

Meghalaya has witnessed many major road accidents in the past few years. A person was killed and 22 others including 20 BSF jawans suffered injuries after a bus, in which they were travelling, fell into a gorge at Umtyrra in East Jaintia Hills district in October, 2019.

In January, 2016, at least 10 persons died and 20 others got injured after a bus fell into a gorge at Tonseng in East Jaintia Hills district. In June, 2016, at least 30 persons were killed and 11 others sustained grievous injuries after a bus, in which they were travelling, veered off the road and fell into a gorge at Sonapur.

In August, 2014, at least four people were killed and 32 others injured after a bus, which they were travelling in, fell into a deep gorge in Garo Hills.
