SHILLONG: The National People’s Party has managed to get a good number of seats in the Meghalaya state assembly as per the counting that was conducted on Thursday. But they fall short of the number necessary for a clear majority and form the government.

The public of Meghalaya had decided to give another chance to the National People’s Party-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance in the state. The party managed to secure a total of 26 seats in the state assembly out of a total of 60 seats. Voting was postponed for one constituency in the state due to the death of one of the candidates.

Post counting, the head of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Meghalaya, Ernest Mawrie wrote to the head of the National People’s Party, Conrad K Sangma. He mentioned that as per the directions of the national president Jagat Prakash Nadda, Ernest Mawrie mentioned, “I do hereby formally communicate with you and submit a ‘Letter of Support’ for the institution of the new government as an outcome of the results of the assembly elections”

It is important to note that the Bharatiya Janata Party managed to win just two seats, which will still not be enough to form the government in the state. The minimum number of 31 seats is necessary for any party or coalition to form a government in the state of Meghalaya.

In the previous assembly elections conducted in the year 2018, the National People’s Party had secured just 19 seats, but with the help of multiple partners, they formed the MDA government. Bharatiya Janata Party was also a partner in the coalition government in the state. Another local party, the United Democratic Party had also been a part of this coalition, and they have emerged as the 2nd largest party in terms of winning seats. They have secured a total of 11 seats in this election.
